Basilique de Saint-Denis (Saint-Denis, France)

The Basilica Saint-Denis is located in the northern Paris suburb of Saint-Denis. It was the burial place of all the kings of France (except three) from the end of the 10th century. It was originally founded in 630 by Dagobert, King of the Franks, as an abbey church on the burial place of Saint Denis, patron saint of France and the first bishop of Paris. The church was rebuilt in the 12th century as one of the first in the gothic style. The building suffered damage in the Revolution and was restored in the 19th century by Viollet-le-Duc. In 1966 the basilica became a cathedral, the seat of a bishop, and a copy of the throne of Dagobert is now used as the bishop’s throne. The main nave and side naves are still in use as a church and are not visited. The choir and crypt with its royal tombs have been converted into a museum. Opening hours are 10am to 7pm 1 April to 30 September and to 5pm for the rest of the year. On Sundays opening time is 12 noon. The website has details of facilities available for handicapped visitors. The basilica is close to the Saint-Denis RER station and the Saint-Denis-Basilique metro station.
