Doullens was located on the frontier of France and Spanish-held Netherlands and found its belfry, first recorded in 1275, frequently destroyed. The citizens quickly rebuilt it each time, such was the importance of belfries representing civic power and pride. The current one dates from the 17th century and was the meeting place of the town council and also a watchtower, prison and chapel. Famous visitors included Louis XIV and Richelieu. It stands 28m high and is a mixture of red brick and light-coloured stone which was popular at the time. The belfry is slightly offset from centre of the surrounding building and is topped by an unusual elongated lookout point. The ground floor has a fine vaulted vestibule. The belfry is one of a group of French and Belgian belfries which have now collectively been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
