The Palace of Holyroodhouse (Edinburgh, United Kingdom)

The Palace of Holyroodhouse can be found at the End of Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, opposite side of the newly built Scottish Parliament and right next to Holyrood Park. The palace is the official residence of Her Majesty The Queen in Scotland. Originally an abbey was founded at the location in 1126, it’s ruins can still be visited. The palace is a later addition that was built in the 15th century and extended during the 16th century. It is probably best known as residence of Mary, Queen of Scots. The Scottish Queen got married at Holyroodhouse where also the famous and brutal murder of her secretary David Rizzio took place. During the Jacobite rising of 1745 Bonnie Prince Charlie had his headquarters at the palace and during the French Revolution it was shelter to the Comte d’Artois, the youngest brother of Louis XVI. During the times when no member of the Royal Family is in residence the palace is open to the public. The Royal Apartments, the Queen’s Gallery and, during summer only, the gardens are open for visitors.
