Sunshine Skyway Bridge (St. Petersburg, USA)

The Sunshine Skyway Bridge is the currently the longest cable-stayed concrete bridge in the world and gets its name from its brightly painted yellow cables. It spans the mouth of Tampa Bay between St Petersburg and Bradenton. Its main span is four miles in length but the crossing including the causeways is more than nine miles over open water. The central span rises to 190 feet where it crosses the shipping lanes. The bridge was completed in 1987. It replaced the previous bridge which was hit by a tanker in a storm in 1980. Several spans were brought down killing 35 motorists and passengers in a bus. It carries the I275 interstate. There is a $1 toll in each direction.
