Sant Miquel del Fai (Sant Miquel del Fai, Spain)
The Nature Park at Sant Miquel del Fai combines nature, architecture and history. The area is a natural formation of rocks and water, and has been inhabited since Neolithic times. River action, rainfall and annual thaws have created a series of caves, rock formations, waterfalls and pools. The area is also rich in wildlife – plants, birds and amphibians. The first written evidence of occupation dates from 887, with references to a 4th century hermitage. The church of Sant Miquel, built into the rock, dates from 997 and is the best preserved troglodyte church in the country. A gift of land from the counts of Barcelona meant a monastery could be founded next to the church and this survived until 1832. The Priory House of the monastery was built in the 15th century and still stands as a fully preserved gothic building. Today the area is both a natural scenic attraction and a popular place for weddings and corporate and group events. There is a picnic area, children’s play area and souvenir shop. On Sundays a bus service operates from Barcelona.
