Réserve Africaine de Sigean (Sigean, France)

The Réserve Africaine de Sigean lies just outside the town of Sigean about 15 km south of Narbonne. It opened in 1974. The 300 hectare park is large enough to allow its 3,800 animals, from over 150 species, freedom to roam and to simulate the conditions in the wild. As well as providing a visitor attraction, its aims are also research, education and the conservation of endangered species. There are two circuits, one on foot, and another 6 kilometre route in visitors’ own cars or in a park minibus. Three or four hours are needed to see the entire park. Facilities include a restaurant, cafeteria, shop and picnic area and it is accessible for disabled visitors. As these are wild animals, safety is paramount and there are strict instructions about visitor behaviour. Pets are allowed if kept on a short lead. The park is open every day from 9am but closing times vary according to the time of year – details are on the website.
