    Old Sarum (Salisbury, United Kingdom)

During the Iron Age (approximately 500 BC) a settlement was built at Old Sarum on a hill overlooking what is now the City of Salisbury. The town was subsequently inhabited by Romans and Saxons and there were people living at the site until the 13th Century, when legend has it that a bowman fired an arrow down into the valley to choose the location of New Sarum (now known as Salisbury). Today Old Sarum is maintained by English Heritage, who open it to the public 361 days per year (it closes only on 24/25/26 December and New Years Day.)Visitors can see the remains of the ancient town. Parking, toilets and refreshments are available.
