    Originally built in the 12th century, the cathedral was damaged, altered and rebuilt many times. As a result there is a mix of styles. There is a fine Romanesque dome and the white marble episcopal throne dates from the same period. The tomb of Pope John XXII is in flamboyant gothic. The tympanum with its frescoes by Martini has been moved to the Palais des Papes. Later aditions include baroque galleries and the madonna at the top of the tall bell tower is 19th century. It is the seat of the archbishop of Avignon. Together with the Palais des Papes, the Pont St Bénezet and the Petit Palais it forms a UNESCO World Heritage site.
