North Terrace (Adelaide, Australia)
North Terrace: A Capital Vacation Destination
Home to South Australia’s Parliament House and several of its most important cultural institutions, North Terrace is a lovely, tree-lined boulevard in Adelaide, the state capital. The neighbourhood around North Terrace is an ideal base for few days of sightseeing; the streets are studded with a good mix of hotels and bordered on three sides by some of the city’s finest green spaces, including the Adelaide Botanic Gardens. Top attractions such as the Adelaide Oval and the Adelaide Central Market are also within a short drive or pleasant stroll from North Terrace.
Go Mad for March
If you love a big, lively crowd, visit Adelaide during the third month of the year. The locals call it “Mad March” because at this time of the year, the city hosts an eclectic list of major festivals and events. Artists, performers, and musicians come from around the world to attend the Adelaide Fringe Festival and WOMAD, the World of Music and Dance festival. Car enthusiasts turn out in droves for the heart-pumping Clipsal 500; the supercar race is the “largest domestic motorsport event in Australia,” and is typically celebrated with massive street parties as well as big-ticket concerts. The second Monday in March is a state holiday and also the date of the Adelaide Cup, the “heart” of horse-racing in South Australia since its inception in 1864. These are just a few of the biggest of the many, many events in this exciting month.
Or Go Anytime but March
While Mad March is the best time if you love a big crowd, the second-best time is really any other month. Adelaide enjoys a mild, Mediterranean climate and is packed with year-round attractions, many of which you will find in or near North Terrace. With 80 specialist stalls selling everything from fresh local seafood to fine pastries, the Adelaide Central Market is a must-stop any day of the year. So too is the Adelaide Oval, even if you don’t have game or concert tickets in hand; climbing up the roof of this spectacular stadium for an exceptional view of the city by day, dusk, or starlight is one of the most popular things to do in Adelaide. The Victorian-era Mortlock Wing of the State Library was once named one of the “most beautiful libraries in the world,” and if that’s not enough eye candy for you, stroll down North Terrace to the Art Gallery of South Australia and continue on to the Adelaide Botanic Garden.
