Design Museum (London, United Kingdom)
The Design Museum near Tower Bridge in London, opened in 1989, is dedicated to the history of design from the beginning of the 20th century to current times. It has a collection of items which were generally available through mass production and which represented a radical new design approach. The fields covered include domestic appliances, furniture, fashion and communications technology. The museum has over 2000 items on display, including iconic pieces such as the Sinclair C5 electric car, a Philipe Starck kettle and a road sign. The building itself, in a converted banana warehouse, is in the 1930s Modernist style. The display area is divided between items permanently on show, and temporary exhibitions usually around a theme such as shoes or a car marque. There is a shop and café on site and disabled access to all areas. An entrance fee is charged. It is open every day except 25 and 26 December from 10am to 5.45pm.
