Central Park is America’s first park, issue from a design competition won by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux. It spreads from 5th Avenue, over a 6 mile perimeter in the heart of New York, covering 843 acres, 136 of which are woodland, 250 acres of lawns and 150 acres of water. The original park plans took 15 years to complete and cost the equivalent of 200 million US dollars to build. Almost 5 million cubic meters of soil and rock where transported, 36 bridges and arches built, 11 overpasses, the Belverdere castle, 51 sculptures and over 500 000 plantations. In the park live 275 species of migratory birds, 21 playgrounds, 6.5 miles of park drives and 4.5 miles of pathways. The traffic along the park drives is regulated and each drive has opening and closing times which can be found on the official web site of the park.
