St Peters Basilica (Vatican City, Vatican City)

St Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican City is one the largest churches of the Christian world. The church dates from around 1506 when it was begun under the papacy of Julius II. Its current appearance owes a lot to the architects Bernini, Maderno and Michelangelo; from the dome and a bronze canopy, to the many sculptures. Tours are available from various sources. You can print out a one page walking tour from the website and do it yourself or you can rent an audio walking tour. Many tour companies in Rome offer free tours of the basilica and you can find out about the free guided tour schedule at the Information Desk near the Post Office on the left of the basilica. Tour groups with a priest can schedule mass at the Clementine Chapel near St. Peter’s tomb. There is a schedule for attending mass at St Peter’s, but it will be in Italian. If the Pope is in town he will usually appear at noon on Sundays to bless the crowd and pray to the Angelus. Weddings can be held in the Chapel of the Choir at St. Peter’s Basilica. The Basilica is open daily: Apr-Sep 7:00am-7:00pm, Oct-Mar 7:00am-6:00pm There is a dress code which is strictly enforced at St. Peter’s Basilica.
