Located close to the castle, St Mary’s Church dates from the 12th century and was probably built by the masons employed by the castle. It is noted as the burial place of the 19th century author, Anne Bronte and her gravestone in the churchyard is a popular attraction for visitors. Admission to the church is free and it is open daily (except Sunday) from 10am until 4pm. The churchyard is accessible at all times. The long distance walk “The Cleveland Way” passes close to this attraction.
