    Saint-Saulve Abbey Church (Montreuil-sur-Mer, France)

The Saint-Saulve abbey church dates back to the 12th century but is located on the site of a 10th century monastery. This monastery had been built by Breton monks and was dedicated to Saint Walloy. In 1467 the church was destroyed during an earthquake and needed to be rebuilt. Only 70 years later it was damaged by fire during the siege of 1537, its transept and choir were destroyed. Today the only original 12th century part that still exists is Saint-Saulve’s facade and massive bell tower. The sculptured portal of the church was added after the catastrophe of 1467. Within the church you can see a collection of reliquaries and the oldest cross in Europe. Entrance to the church is free, ample free parking spaces can be found right in front on the Place Gambetta.
