    Erasmus Bridge (Rotterdam, Netherlands)

Designed by Ben van Berkel and inaugurated by Queen Beatrix on 6 September 1996, the Erasmus Bridge is a landmark structure which spans the Nieuwe Maas river and connects the North and South sections of the city. Designed to reflect the industrial heritage of the region, the bridge has been nicknamed “The Swan” due to the shape of its 139m high pylon which supports the structure with steel cables. The Erasmus Bridge has a total length of 802m and offers dual carriageways as well as a tramline, pedestrian zone and bicycle path. The multi-functional structure is used by approximately 20,000 people daily and includes a viaduct as well as a retractable section for boats to pass through. It has also been used as a backdrop for commercials and various light and fireworks displays.
