The Smartline Palma Rima Hotel is one of the top quality hotels in the Gambia. This favoured complex is nestled amongst palm trees of the gleaming coastline offering large landscaped greenery and well appointed rooms. Both business and leisure travellers will find this hotel suitable. Rooms are furnished with a TV, en suite bathroom, and air conditioning for an additional fee. Amenities include a swimming pool, laundry and ironing services for an additional fee, and a safety deposit box. A complimentary breakfast buffet is served in the hotel's on-site restaurant. Guests have a choice of a vegetarian menu. There is also a bar. Cathedral (Le Seu), Es Baluard Contemporary Art Museum, Placa Major, Llotja, and Palau de l'Almudaina are just under two miles from the Smartline Palma Rima Hotel. Crocodile Pool and the Kachikally Museum are approximately four miles from the premises.
Rooms are basic but tolerable and a nice size. Housekeeping is to a decent standard and there is lots of hot water. The towels are a bit rough, and the breakfast can get boring, but you can easily deal with it. You will have to get used to the plastic plates and cutlery. You can also order poached eggs or omelettes. There are plenty of great places to eat around as well.
There is a serene, relaxed vibe around the hotel. You can certainly relax and “go with the flow.” At least that's what it's like inside the hotel. Once you venture out, it's not dangerous, but you may feel hassled by the “bumpsters.” These are people who try to sell you anything they can and they don't like taking no for an answer.
If you have time, take an outing with the tour operator. It may break your heart though once you view the poverty.
The hotel is a bit run down, but you are in a certain part of the world where the standards are not so high. The tennis court and play area are not worth bothering with. There is nothing attractive about the hotel exterior either. They could at least paint it and add some shrubbery. It would work wonders!
If you choose the all-inclusive option, you may be in for a surprise. You have to pay extra for basic things like a fridge. All-inclusive doesn't necessarily mean “all” at this hotel.
Even though the staff is helpful, you get the feeling that they are doing it just for the tips. Sincerity and genuine overall courtesy is lacking.
